Switch on to energy-efficient light bulbs

BER cert energy efficient light bulbThe phasing out of traditional light bulbs will commence this week as controls on energy-wasting bulbs comes into force. According to ESB Customer Supply, householders can save around €100 a year by switching to energy-efficient bulbs. From 1st September old-style incandescent bulbs go out of production. The phasing out will start with 100-watt bulbs. Lower wattage products will be eliminated over the next three years, with 60-watt bulbs staying on sale until 2011.

Shops will be allowed to sell bulbs already in stock without incurring fines, but will not be able to obtain any new supplies. The ban aims to reduce electricity bills, lower carbon emission and reduce energy consumption.

In London, traffic lights at 300 junctions across London are to be made permanently 'green' after the London Mayor, Boris Johnson, announced plans to install energy-saving LEDs at 3,500 traffic lights. He said Transport for London (TfL) will install more than 10,000 LEDs, each of which is expected to cut energy use and carbon emissions by 60% compared to existing bulbs. The £2.4m project is expected to cut total annual carbon emissions by 600 tonnes, reducing TfL's energy bill by about £200,000 in the process.
